Sister Schools

Fukiai has long been a sister school for schools outside of Japan. Currently, Fukiai has 6 Sister Schools:

1.      Morayfield (Brisbane, Australia)

2.      MacGregor (Brisbane, Australia)

3.      Nathan Hale (Seattle, America)

4.      Fenix (Sweden)

5.      Taichung First Senior High School (Taiwan)

6.      Grove Academy (Scotland, the U.K.)

Having Sister Schools allows Fukiai the opportunity to take part in a variety of different global activities. For example, Fukiai often communicates with its sister schools through e-mail exchanges and teleconferencing. Such activities allow Fukiai students to discuss important global events with people in other parts of the world, thereby giving them a better understanding of the world around them.

Fukiai High School has a long-established program of accepting foreign students for short and long-term stays at its school. For long-term stays, students usually study at Fukiai from September to June. Students can be chosen from a number of countries, for example, Canada, America, Germany, Australia, etc. The maximum number of long-term students allowed to study at Fukiai at the same time is 3. In the case of short-term stays, students are only chosen from Australia. Fukiai regularly accepts about 2-3 students over the course of a single year. Because 3rd year students at Fukiai finish classes early in January, foreign students who study at Fukiai must be in either 1st or 2nd grade.

In addition to foreign students studying at Fukiai, Fukiai students often travel to other countries in study abroad programmes. Each year, 1 or 2 students travel to Brisbane, Australia to study for a summer at Morayfield High School. In addition, sometimes a Fukiai student can travel to other countries, America, for example, to study for an entire academic year.

Cultural Exchange & Visits to Fukiai

Throughout the school year, Fukiai welcomes many foreign students to its school. These students often tell stories about their local schools, cities, countries and cultures. These talks and presentations are always very enjoyable for Fukiai students, and they learn a lot about foreign places and people. This past school year, Fukiai welcomed, among others, a group of high school students from Philadelphia, a group from Australia, and in February, 2 high school students from China. These types of visits are very common at Fukiai, and are always a highlight for the students.

Also, each year Fukiai has an gInternational Day.h On this day, many foreigners visit Fukiai and talk to all the first graders. In 2007, about 20 people visited Fukiai. Some were English teachers, some were University students, another was a doctor, and so on. They did some presentations for the students and the students prepared some activities for the visitors. International Day is a great opportunity for the first grade students to learn a lot about foreign people and cultures.

Trips Abroad

4 years ago, Fukiai started a program for second grade students. Each year, all second grade students go on a trip to another country. Last year, students travelled to Taiwan. However, for the first three years, students travelled to Thailand. The trip takes place in November and lasts for 4 days. The purpose of this trip is to develop cultural understanding. Fukiai students are able to interact with people of other cultures and learn a lot about another country. Also, through presentations, Fukiai students can tell others a lot about Japanese culture. This second grade trip is often one of the most memorable events for students during their 3 years at Fukiai High School.

In addition to regular school trips, Fukiai students sometimes take part in special trips. As an example, in September, 3 Fukiai students travelled to Seattle. They went as ambassadors of Kobe City High Schools. Trips like these give students an experience they will never forget.
